Legally Speaking

Updated: Jul 4, 2022

Back when I lead a BA department of amazing unicorns, I would share articles with the subject line - “Interesting Read”. I’d sit back as comments, opinions and sometimes hilarious GIFs, would flood into the group email... I loved this so much! Not only did it show I was clearly not the only BA person who geeked out on copyright lawsuits, it was an example of how smart they all were.

Since I no longer lead a department of unicorns or humans, I’m sharing this article written by Tim Cushing @TechDirt. https://tdrt.io/h7T I’m hoping it will elicit your comments and thoughts (if not GIFs) on the subject of copyright protection specifically for dance moves.

I’m sure many of you have seen the articles and online chatter about multiple lawsuits against Epic Games and their use of dance moves in Fortnite. What do you think? Should dance moves be protected? How would enforcement be managed by the Copyright Office? How would you file? Submit a video of the dance move along with written step by step instructions? How could it be fixed in tangible medium? Where would you even put the © notice? (One commenter has suggested the dance moves ought to be registered with the “Ministry of Silly Walks”! LOL!) In any case, hope to hear from you and be careful out on the dance floor people ;) #hailstormio #modernba
